Project 6: WHAT WHY HOW WHAT IF (a real-world intervention)
I was trying to find out what therapeutic interventions have been done at the moment for people with dyslexia and I came across something interesting:
Research has shown that there is a link between colour and dyslexia and that using a soft background rather than a white one can help dyslexics to better define words, writing and spelling difficulties. Different people prefer different colours, so the colour of the background and text should be user-defined. The reasons for the link between colour and dyslexia and how colour variation works are not known.
People with dyslexia sometimes use special glasses to help them read. In a recent study, colour problems affected many dyslexic people, not just dyslexics. Half of the children in the study, aged 7-11, reported that they perceived text better when using coloured overlays or clear vinyl sheets, due to a glare on the page known as ‘Meares/Irlen syndrome’ or visual stress. When coloured filters are placed on white pages, glare is reduced and people report that they are able to read faster and for longer than before. In addition, they feel less tired and are able to understand and comprehend what they are reading better.

This intervention also has some limitations because not all people with dyslexia are colour sensitive, his users actually need to tell themselves if they are colour sensitive, and it is too arbitrary to take a random coloured transparent board as an aid. But this intervention was inspiring to me, and it will require me to use more colour in my app in subsequent program development.
